[Update again - This is probably fixed in the new update. So the real fix is now to connect your PS3 to the internet before you start playing - it will then download and install the patch]
I’d played GTA for a few hours, all seemed well. I then upgraded my PS3 system software (although this might not have been the root cause, based on comments below), to get the new Playstation Store. That went well, new store looks nice. But then I try to play GTA-IV, and it just hangs on the loading screen saying “LOADING - CLEAN GETAWAY” (the name of the last mission).
I tried various combinations of resetting and re-inserting the disk, nothing worked. So I then went to the “Game Data Utility” (at the top of the “Games” tab), and selected the GTA data, and deleted it (press Triangle, then select delete). This does not delete your saved game, but forces it to re-load all the data it had cached. I figured maybe there was something OS specific in the cached data. Anyway, rebooted, it re-cached all the data (”Installing data to hard disk drive“), and then IT WORKED. Phew! And poor work, Sony and/or Rockstar.
Step by step
- Take GTA Disk Out
- Reboot
- On the “Game” tab, go to the top and select “Game Data Utility”
- Select GTA, and press Triangle
- Select Delete, then Okay.
- Re-insert disk and start game
- Game will re-load all the data, taking a few minutes.
- It should now load the last saved game, hopefully!
[UPDATE] Stefan suggest a simpler fix. Try this first as it’s much quicker.
- quit the game
- sign out of psn
- sign back in to psn
- load game
Note I’ve not actually tried Stephan’s method, as deleting the game data worked for me. It could be there’s multiple bugs causing similar symptoms - just try both fixes.
[UPDATE 2] I had it crash again, so I signed out of PSN (did not bother to sign in again), and it worked.

Hey Mick,
I had the same issue- thank god for your post. But get this- I’d already installed the upgrade before I started playing GTA IV. What brought on the hanging for me? MOVING MY PS3 UPSTAIRS.
Believe it or not, I had to switch the display settings to 1080i so that my upstairs would work with the PS3, and that alone was enough to knock GTAIV off the perch with this bug.
Pathetic!
Hi Mick,
GTA IV hung my PS3 (80gb) on loading Clean Getaway as well. I deleted the game data, inserted the disk and launched it again. Game re-installed data to hd… and Clean Getaway started up fine.
A very annoying bug. Hopefully RockStar will push out a fix soon.
:-)
Same problem here guys, however a different point in the game.
Following step by step guide now. Thanks for this!!
Yes, same here. On Roman’s Sorrow for me. The fix did not work. Not sure what to do now…
The real fix
1 quit the game
2 sign out of psn
3 sign back in to psn
4 load game
THANK U Stefan!!! the real fix worked for me!!!
Just Hold PS button,
Quit Game,
Log out of PSN network
sign back in to PSN start game…
all is well.
:-)
Thanks Stefan, I’ve added your fix to my post. I’m suspecting these are two separate bugs, so people can try both fixes.
I had this problem too on Roman’s Sorrow… I tried deleting the game data but it didn’t work… disabling my network connection was the only thing that got the game running again for me.
I hope Rockstar patch this quickly cos it’d be shame for such a frustrating glitch to mar such an otherwise perfect game.
I had GTA4 lock up on me, then it stopped reading the disk when it was inserted. deleted cache and still had a problem. Ended up having to re format my hard drive, reinstalled and then had it happen again. After a second reformat it locks up while installing data. I am using a launch version 60gig. Hope Rockstar works it out and my PS isn’t fried
Hi,
I have a 60gb and mine kept crashing. I have done the following and it hasnt crashed since.
1. goto the GTA IV game saves and delete the save that says profile.
2. Load GTA IV and once loaded, turn off autosave and then save the game immediately. It has worked for me.
As proof of concept, I turned the autosave back on and it started crashing again, I did the above again and it has worked ever since.
To me its the autosave that making mine crash.
I was getting an indefinite load, then I uninstalled about six or seven times, and the best I got was about a half-second in the game before a complete lockup (no interface response, had to cold-boot).
Then I disabled PSN. I haven’t had a single crash or any other odd behavior since. Some people say that all I need to do is disable Media Server; I’ll just wait for the patch, it’s a long campaign. I hope this helps somebody out there.
GTA iv will not even lauch in my 40gb
I wish I could play GTA, but I recently switched to Linux and I don’t think Wine could handle it. Although I here some people are getting Assassin’s Creed to work on Linux so who knows.
Is there any way to improve loading times?? Will a faster hard drive (raptor for example) make any difference??
to Ian: I think NO :/
@skip, i don’t think GTA got released for the PC :(
Thx this helped me fix it :)
